SMS
Short message service (SMS) is a
globally accepted platform to deliver wireless information services. Developed
in 1991, it enables transmission of alphanumeric messages in text format between
mobile subscribers and external systems like e-mail, paging and voice mail
systems.
Active mobile handsets can send/receive short messages anytime,
unhindered by the calls in progress. Again the short messages are delivered
through network. This means that if the recipients' device is out of reach, the
message is stored till the device becomes available and the recipient receives
the message. Sender can also opt to receive acknowledgement that his message has
been read, when the recipient actually reads it.
